Fantasy football bye weeks: draft a team where everyone plays

Short answer: when too many of your fantasy players are on bye, start your best bench players, claim fill-ins a week early, and don't drop good players for a one-week fix. If your lineup still has holes, add a one-week duel. In Draft Duel teams on bye are never drawn, so every player you pick has a game that week.

Beat your rivals. Every week. In 5 minutes.

Why bye weeks wreck season-long lineups

You drafted in August for a whole season, and every NFL team sits out one week in the middle of it. In most seasons, byes run from Week 5 through Week 14, and some weeks have as many as six teams off at once. An empty lineup spot is a zero, and a zero can cost you the week.

What to do when your players are on bye

OptionWhat it meansHonest take
Start your bench depthSlide backups into the open spots. The first move. It works if your bench has players with a real role.
Claim fill-ins a week earlyAdd waiver replacements before the bye week arrives.Smart. Everyone else hunts the same fill-ins the night before.
Drop a good player for a one-week fixCut someone useful so you can start a fill-in.Usually a mistake. One missing game costs less than losing a player for the season.
Short-term tradeTrade for a starter whose bye is already over. Can work, but don't overpay to cover one week.
Take the weak weekStart what you have and accept a lower score.Fine for a strong team. One bad week rarely sinks a good season.
Add a one-week duelDraft a new team for this week only, against one opponent.Doesn't fix your league lineup, but gives you a full team to root for. Draft Duel is built for it.

How a weekly duel avoids the problem

Draft Duel is a free, one-week, head-to-head fantasy football game, so byes never pile up on a roster you're stuck with.

Keep your league, add a duel

You don't have to quit your season-long league. Set your best lineup, then add a duel during your worst bye week. Challenge a league-mate with a share link or code, get paired through matchmaking, or pass one phone back and forth.

How a duel works

  1. A random NFL team is drawn each round. Both players pick a player from that same team.
  2. First pick alternates every round, so neither side gets every top choice.
  3. Every pick has a 90-second clock. If time runs out, the best available player who fits your roster is picked for you.
  4. The whole draft takes 5 minutes.
  5. Standard PPR scoring from that week's real games decides it. The higher total wins.

Draft Duel is free, with no entry fees and no cash prizes, and it runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I draft a player who is on bye in Draft Duel?

No. Draft Duel only draws NFL teams that have a game that week. Teams on bye are never drawn, so every player you can draft is scheduled to play.

What if a drawn team's game already started?

It won't be drawn. If you draft after that week's games begin, teams whose games have already kicked off are skipped, so you only pick from teams that haven't played yet.

What do I do when too many of my fantasy players are on bye?

Use your bench and the waiver wire for your season-long league, then add a one-week duel. In Draft Duel you draft a fresh team from teams playing that week, in 5 minutes.

Do I have to quit my fantasy league to play Draft Duel?

No. A duel is one week against one opponent, so you can keep your season-long league and play a duel on the side.

How many players do I need for a duel?

Nine starters: QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, FLEX, K and DEF. There's no bench.

Should I drop a good player to cover a bye week?

Usually not. A bye only takes a player out for one game. Start a bench player or a cheap waiver add instead, and only drop players with little long-term value.

Does a bye-week duel cost anything?

No. Draft Duel is free. There are no entry fees and no cash prizes. You only need a free account.
